Kitchen sink drama

I was speaking to my friend the other day, telling her what I’d cooked and how I intended to write about it. She replied by saying she cooked a lot but wouldn’t necessarily write about it because subjects like that are termed as kitchen sink drama. I had never heard the term before, and she went on to explain that it was a derogatory term used to describe people who wrote about the mundane things that went on in their lives. She did not say this to cause offence, neither was any taken. I mulled it over for a few days, and found time to scour the web today to find out more. The meaning I found was a bit different from the way she’d defined it, here’s my take on the whole thing.

I am a SAHM (stay at home mother) by choice. I like writing, and without sounding too big-headed (and right now I don’t care if I do), I like to think I am good at it. I don’t know that my writing has a niche, I write about life as I see and live it. A lot of my life revolves around my family, from time to time I deem it necessary to feed them, so I cook. If it is something I enjoy cooking and eating, I’ll write about it. If it is something I’ve never cooked before, and it turns out well, I might write about it. I find my children quite fascinating, sometimes I write about them. If something in the wider world interests me enough, I’ll write about that too.

I am a self-confessed bookaholic. My addiction ranges from fiction to cookbooks. Last count , I had over 50 cookbooks. T has banned me from buying any more. I did not realise he was off from work this week, I did not plan on him being home when 4 more arrived this morning! So from now on, I’ll write a bit more about my culinary exploits in the kitchen. Note the emphasis on culinary. I’m not sure that any other exploits in the kitchen are anybody’s business but ours mine. Lucidlilith kindly gave me a recipe for egusi stew. If she permits me, I’ll post that up too. A certain someone owes me an okra recipe. I am still waiting, patiently. I saw Levi Roots making pot roast beef on the telly the other night.Easter is approaching, I need to get my cook on. I searched on the net, turns out the recipe is in one of his 2 books, both of which I already own. My search also led me to a food blog, as well as a host of others.

Oh, as per my cooking, T has promised to give me his rating out of 10 for each blogged meal. I in turn promise to publish his rating, be it good, bad or ugly.

And there you have it. My kitchen, my sink, my drama.

Thanks for stopping by to take a look at life, as I see it.

p.s Have you been over to naija stories? Check it out. I’m off to write my entry.

p.p.s. Justjoxy’s blog is now on Facebook, fans please 🙂

Kitchen sink drama indeed, lol. I cook too, and when it turns out nice I’, one happy lady. I don’t buy cook books, the WWW is my cooking guide. I will be looking forward to your recipes and how T rates them. Now the latter should be interesting.

Hey Myne, my cook book habit started quite innocently enough a few years ago, and then just snowballed! I look on the www for recipes too, usually when I see something on a cookery channel. T’s ratings? He has been quite unflattering about some of my efforts in the past, one sample is ‘It tasted of only maggi and salt’ lol. However, I’ll be back on Friday to give his unedited rating, wish me luck 🙂

I’ve never heard the term kitchen sink drama before! I actually like when people post recipes (and pictures to go along with it are even better!) I can’t tell you how many new recipes I’ve tried since I began blogging 3 years ago!

Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by my blog yesterday and leave such a kind comment regarding my daughter. It warmed my heart…it really did.

Hi Helene, I’d been wondering whether or not to include pictures, now I will make an effort to. I enjoy reading your blog, yesterday was the first time I felt I absolutely had to make a comment. Hope you’re feeling so much better now, thanks for stopping by 🙂

Kitchen sink drama, this is a new one for me, I’d also never heard about it before. I am loving all the recipes I’m discovering on various blogs, however I do wish I had more cook books, particularly for baking!

Hey Fragilelooks, welcome. Me, I’m a total foodie. I love shopping for it, cooking it, watching it being cooked, reading about it …. you get the picture. Good thing it is then that I don’t spend a lot of time actually eating it, lol.

You seem to be expressing similar sentiments as my latest post about the joys of cooking and how that can be mocked in this day and age. Take a look. I’d like to know what you think.

Indeed. Thank you for taking a look at mine too.

Comments welcome :)
