Kitchen sink drama

I was speaking to my friend the other day, telling her what I’d cooked and how I intended to write about it. She replied by saying she cooked a lot but wouldn’t necessarily write about it because subjects like that are termed as kitchen sink drama. I had never heard the term before, and she went on to explain that it was a derogatory term used to describe people who wrote about the mundane things that went on in their lives. She did not say this to cause offence, neither was any taken. I mulled it over for a few days, and found time to scour the web today to find out more. The meaning I found was a bit different from the way she’d defined it, here’s my take on the whole thing.

I am a SAHM (stay at home mother) by choice. I like writing, and without sounding too big-headed (and right now I don’t care if I do), I like to think I am good at it. I don’t know that my writing has a niche, I write about life as I see and live it. A lot of my life revolves around my family, from time to time I deem it necessary to feed them, so I cook. If it is something I enjoy cooking and eating, I’ll write about it. If it is something I’ve never cooked before, and it turns out well, I might write about it. I find my children quite fascinating, sometimes I write about them. If something in the wider world interests me enough, I’ll write about that too.

I am a self-confessed bookaholic. My addiction ranges from fiction to cookbooks. Last count , I had over 50 cookbooks. T has banned me from buying any more. I did not realise he was off from work this week, I did not plan on him being home when 4 more arrived this morning! So from now on, I’ll write a bit more about my culinary exploits in the kitchen. Note the emphasis on culinary. I’m not sure that any other exploits in the kitchen are anybody’s business but ours mine. Lucidlilith kindly gave me a recipe for egusi stew. If she permits me, I’ll post that up too. A certain someone owes me an okra recipe. I am still waiting, patiently. I saw Levi Roots making pot roast beef on the telly the other night.Easter is approaching, I need to get my cook on. I searched on the net, turns out the recipe is in one of his 2 books, both of which I already own. My search also led me to a food blog, as well as a host of others.

Oh, as per my cooking, T has promised to give me his rating out of 10 for each blogged meal. I in turn promise to publish his rating, be it good, bad or ugly.

And there you have it. My kitchen, my sink, my drama.
